Bangladesh customs. Invited to someones home for lunch. Am I suppose to bring a gift?

I've been invited to lunch at the home of a co worker who is from Bangladesh. What is the custom when you are invited to their home? Do you bring a gift? Flower? anything? Am I suppose to do anything else?

If not you could bring chocolates for the person who invited you. It is a diplomatic courtesy to bring something to the host when you are invited, specially for dinner. This is worldwide etiquette.

Take along some sweetmeat (Rasgolla, Barfee-Sandesh) or Ice-cream or seasonal fruits (Apple, Orange, Grapes) or Sweetened Curds.





If you can figure out any special family occasion is being celebrated, then surprise the host with gift suiting to that occasion.





PS. Appreciate the food and person prepared it, the best compliment in any language!

Reply:Bangladeshi people like it the most when you present them with gifts for their parents or childern, not themselves. You could take some toys or other kid stuff if that co-worker has kids. Or you could buy a Jai Namaaz (A carpet/mat on which Muslims sit and offer prayers) for his/her parents (if that co worker is Muslim).





Or you could just buy lots of choclolates/sweets/waffers for them.





Flowers are generally liked, but not so much valued as gifts by Bangladeshis.





Another out-of-the box idea could be learning a few Bangla sentnces and surprising them with those sentences. Example:





How are you: toomi kaymon aacho?


How is the family: baashar shaw-bye bhaalow ache?


You look handsome/pretty: tomaake khoob shoondor lag-tese!
Reply:It's a *world* culture to give gifts;;;;;;;;; bring a gift and say "please accept this'.
