My boyfriend gifted me with beautiful sunflowers, and I want to keep them beautiful and alive for as long as possible!
I change the vase water every 3 days and add a little sugar.
what else can i do to keep them alive and healthy?
also, one sunflower's petals have begun to shrivel up. i figure its from an air bubble or something, so i recut the stem under water; what else should i do for this one? if i remove the shriveled leaves will any grow back?
please help me! im very desperate!
Taking care of cut flowers! please help!?
Put them in the refrigerator for 1 day and after that take them out and they should be alot more fresh and they should last longer. I have tried this method before from a friend that told me to do it when my flowers were starting to shrivel up and they lasted me for about 3 days more after putting them in the fridge and also go to your local garden center and you can buy this packet that you put in your vase and it is suppost to make them last for about a week they sell the packet for 3.49$ about, you should go to your local garden center. I also add aspin to the water to make the plant last longer and cut the stem vertically so that the stem absorbs more moisture and they should never be annear heat because the heat dries them up causing them to shrivell up and die, so remember put the vase in a cool and shady location to make them last longer.
Reply:When I have flowers, I change the water almost daily. I also add an Asprin or two. I cut the stems just a little bit about every two days.
Reply:Hi Emilia,
We run an exciting blog on home and garden and I advise my readers on how to care cut flowers all the time. However in this case an air bubble is very difficult to overcome. This will wilt your plant very quickly, so maybe you can actually cant save these flowers, but I can tell you what to do when you are using the sunflower again, first ensure that you use lemonade not water, that does the trick, IN FACT, try and put the sunflowers in lemonade now and maybe they might come back but I doubt it.
I have had sunflowers last up to two and half weeks using a few tricks, like slant cutting and plant food - including water from boiled vegetables. You can get more ways to preserve your cut flowers here on the better homes and garden.info blog:

Reply:Unfortunately, there isn't anything else you can do to make them last longer....And no the leaves will not grow back. Good job on adding the sugar though, that definitely makes them last longer! You can make your flowers last longer by cutting there stems at a diagnal everytime you change the water. This will increase their ability to absorb the fresh water. However, once there petals have dried and wilted, there isn't anything else that can be done. Hope this helps :)
