Are the origins of Mothers Day pagan?

here is what I have read about our Mother's Day celebration. Any thoughts?

On this 100th anniversary of Mother's Day, the woman credited with creating one of the world's most celebrated

holidays probably wouldn't be pleased with all the flowers, candy or gifts.

Anna Jarvis would want us to give mothers a white carnation -- she felt it signified the purity of a mother's love.

Jarvis, who never married and never had children, got the Mother's Day idea after her mother said it would be nice if someone

created a memorial to mothers.

Three years after her mother died in 1905, she organized the first official mother's day service at a church where her mother had spent more than 20 years teaching Sunday school.

Are the origins of Mothers Day pagan?
I don't think you understand what Pagan means.

Paganism refers to people who worship nature and usually the Sun.

What does a wonderful celebration of Mothers have to do with paganism and why should we not commemorate it as such?
Reply:i know the "white represents purity" thing is a concept of pagan and other religions. But I personally feel mother's day does not have to be about any religion, but rather it should be about honoring the person who either birthed you or raised you because you realize they helped to make you who and what you are. not everything has to be connected to a particular religion.
Reply:I have already answered that question, but I will answer it again. Yes, Mother's Day is a pagan celebration. This celebration is a festival derived from the custom of Mother worship in ancient Greece, formal mother worship, with ceremonies to Cybele, or Rhea, the Great Mother of the Gods, were performed on the Ides of March. Encyclopedia Britannica (1959) volume 15 p. 849. Any one who celebrates any pagan celebration is really worshiping the Devil. And talking about Anna Jarvis, who do you think put the idea into her head?
Reply:Rolando C, where did you get your information, In the "Reasoning Book"? Thing is, that book isn't accurate. Before you start quoting it, why don't you do some research and look up the qoutes in the sources that are listed.

Just because this book saids something is pagan, doesn't mean it is.
Reply:Well, the origins are probably secular. I believe that what we now know as "Mother's Day" was largely created by Greeting Card Companies.
Reply:I think you need to find a dictionary and look up the word pagan, then explain why you think Mothers Day is pagan.
Reply:Not in the USA. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother's_Da...
Reply:she was also so upset the way it was commercialised she committed suicide
Reply:Nope...

no more pagan than birthdays or anniversaries

happy mothers day PediC
Reply:very possible. the origin of most holidays are pagan.
Reply:Nope - it's rooted in commericalism.
Reply:I believe they're actually Hallmark-ian.
Reply:How is that "pagan" or "unpagan."??? I don't think it's either.
Reply:I heard it came from some catholics. "Hollydays" dont have anything holly on them. In my country one famous guy said about the holly week. "If this is holly week, how the f.... would be evil week?"
Reply:You answered your own question.
Reply:All holidays are...
Reply:it's not pagan, but it is totally commercial.
Reply:Will your next question be "Athiest, why do you celebrate Mother's Day?"
Reply:Very good!! You get an A+.
Reply:idk wat pagan is
Reply:hmm..so that's the story Hallmark is putting out there?..
Reply:Well honoring motherhood and femininity in general, was very prevalent in pagan societies. In fact most of the modern day theistic religions (i.e. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam), are so inherently misogynistic that women are relegated to chattel, and not really honored. So, though Mother’s Day may not have been an official holiday in pagan times, the spirit behind honoring the sacred feminine, and paying homage to the life giving and sustaining force of the feminine is definitely in keeping with the spirit of Paganism.

Now, why has Mother’s Day, as a celebration, endured for a 100 years since its creation? Simply put, it is good business. Restaurants, florists, and novelty shops get a nice income boost from the practice, and hence it has become a great marketing scheme. Sorry to put a damper on the mystique of Mother’s Day, but we really should be truthful about things like this.
Reply:The first suggestion for a day set aside to honor Mothers was made by Julia Ward Howe. She suggested that it be observed on June 2, as a day dedicated to peace.

Julia was born in 1819 in New York to a prominent family. She was an American writer, lecturer, and reformer. She was known as one of the most famous women of her time. She wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", which was inspired when she visited military camps in Washington, D.C., during the Civil War in 1861. It became the major war song of the Union forces.

Julia became interested in the women's movement. She became the first president of the New England Woman Sufferage Association.

Three years after Frank Hering of Indiana launched his campagin for observance of Mother's Day in 1904, Anna Jarvis began a campaign to a nationwide obervance of Mother's Day. She chose the second Sunday in May. She also began the custom of wearing the carnation.
Reply:I'm sure the Pagans will try to claim that one too. Along with Labor Day, Independence Day, and Martin Luther King Day.
